How it works

Find a locksmith without the surprise bill

Most bad locksmith stories start with a number heard on the phone that was not the number on the invoice. The directory is built to close that gap.

The six questions to ask on the phone
  1. 01

Choose your city and the job

Lockout, car keys, rekeying, a safe. Each city page lists the businesses that say they cover it.

  2. 02

    Compare what each one states

The call-out range, the date it was stated, the areas covered and the registry result, side by side.

  3. 03

Call, and ask for the total

Phone the business directly. Before anyone drives out, ask for the total at this hour, at this address.

Services

Locksmith services, explained

Eight jobs. Each has a national page on what it involves and what gets added to the bill, and a page in every city that is open.

Know before you call

Why the price on the phone and the bill differ

A low advertised figure is usually the call-out fee alone: the first line of the invoice, presented as the whole bill. Labour, parts and the after-hours rate come on top.

So the useful question is never “how much?”. It is “what is the total, at this hour, at this address?” A business that answers it on the phone is telling you how it works.

Why this directory

One rule: no stated fee, no phone number

A directory is only as useful as what it refuses to do. These are the lines we hold for every listing, paid or not.

How we check a listing

We do

  • Print each business’s call-out range with the date it was stated
  • Look the company up in its provincial corporate registry, and again every month
  • Show a phone number only once a business has stated its range
  • Correct or remove a listing when its owner asks, usually the same day

We never

  • Take a commission on a job, or charge per lead or per call
  • Reorder results because a business paid
  • Sell a badge, a verification mark or a better score
  • Publish a price that nobody stated

One sponsored place per city exists, for a flat monthly fee. It is labelled Sponsored and never changes the order of the rest.

Licensing by province

Only three provinces license locksmiths

Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec require a licence, so there you should ask to see it. In the other ten provinces and territories there is none to ask for, which is why we check the corporate registry instead.

What each licence covers

No provincial licence

This is what a listing tells you

Saskatoon shows demonstration listings so you can see the format: services, the stated call-out range and the registry result. Real listings replace them as local businesses confirm their details.

Questions

Common questions

Something else? Write to us and a person answers.

Is Locksmiths Canada a locksmith company?
No. It is an information directory. Nobody is sent to your door by us, we take no bookings and we set no prices. You find a business here and call it directly.
How much does a locksmith cost in Canada?
There is no national rate and no province caps one. The figure to compare is the call-out fee, which is what a business charges to attend before any work is priced, and it typically rises after hours. Every listing on this site that shows a phone number has stated the range it works in and the date it stated it. We publish ranges rather than exact prices, because no locksmith can quote a lock they have not seen.
Why do some listings here have no phone number?
Because that business has not stated a call-out range. It is the one rule the directory runs on: state a range and let us print the date you said it, and your number is shown. Decline, and the listing stays up without a number. We would rather show you an incomplete listing honestly than a complete one that hides the only number you wanted.
Do you take a commission on jobs?
No, and not on any job, ever. We are not paid per lead, per call or per booking, and organic results are never ordered by what a business pays. Sponsored placement exists: one clearly labelled position per city, for a flat monthly fee. Organic results are never reordered by payment, and it never buys a badge, a verification mark or a better score.
What does registry checked mean?
It means we matched the business to its provincial corporate registry and confirmed the company was registered and active on the date printed on the listing. We re-check monthly. It is a check that the company legally exists, not a judgement on the work or the price, and we do not describe it as anything more than that.
Which Canadian provinces license locksmiths?
Three. Alberta licenses locksmiths under the Security Services and Investigators Act, British Columbia under the Security Services Act, and Quebec under the Private Security Act. The other ten provinces and territories have no locksmith licence at all. Several offer voluntary trade certification, which is a qualification rather than permission to trade.
